When you experience a Massive Defeat and your Hero was present during the battle, a Hero Capture can occur. This means that your Hero is no longer present in your army and can no longer provide you the Hero Boosts they possess. You will be notified of this in the battle report. This is also indicated by the bars present over the Hero Portrait and Hero Screen. A Prison is required in the opposing players city for this to happen.
When your Hero is captured, you have the option to set a Bounty on them. This Silver cost incentivises other players to rescue your Hero for you. The Silver you commit will be the amount paid to that player.
If your Stronghold Level is under 15, your Hero cannot be executed, rather your Hero will just be detained for a set period of time. When the time is finished, your Hero will return.
Heroes can be freed multiple ways; you can March and Rescue on the city that is holding your Hero, and other players can free them. The captured Hero can also be released by the capturer themselves! When this occurs, your Hero will return to you. If a Bounty was set, it will be paid to the liberator (the bounty is never paid to the capturer).
If your Hero’s captor had the ability to execute but instead chooses not to, your Hero will attempt to escape. Based on the captor’s prison and your Hero level, your Hero will escape after an amount of time. The higher the Hero level, the quicker your Hero will escape.
If your Hero is executed it will display in your graveyard and you can either revive them or get a new Hero. If you have a Gymnos, your Hero’s XP will retain when resurrected.
When you start the game you are given a single item which allows you to choose a different hero if you don’t like the one randomly chosen for you. However, the hero selection screen only gives you a small portrait of each hero, and doesn’t really tell you what they look like. It also doesn’t let you see the hero before confirming your choice.
They are shown here in the same order as their portraits are shown in the hero selection screen.
